My Story
Aaron McGarvey is a native New Yorker who has called Central Florida home since his family moved to the Orlando area in 1998. A proud product of Orange County Public Schools, he attended high school at University High School before moving on to study French horn and pursue his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education at the University of Central Florida. As part of his education, he had the privilege of interning with Brian Sullivan and had the honor of interning at Lake Brantley High School with FBA Hall of Fame member Cindy Berry. He is currently pursuing his Master's in Music Education at the University of South Carolina.
An educator at heart, Aaron spent four years teaching elementary and general music at St. Margaret Mary Catholic School in Winter Park, Florida. While there, he pursued professional development opportunities to better enable him to teach his students, including taking the first two levels of the Orff-Schulwerk Master Teacher Certification, including studying for Level II at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in July 2017. Since 2017, he has been the Music Caption Head and Brass Caption Head for the University High School band program, where he has helped lead the UHS Marching Band to three straight state finals appearances, as well as winning Best Music (4A) in 2022. For the 2018 school year, he returned home full-time to the OCPS family that fostered his love of music and teaching and accepted a position teaching at Legacy Middle School, where he teaches the Symphonic Band, the Concert Band, the "Afterburners" Jazz Band, the Intermediate Jazz Band and the Beginning Band. Since 2018, he is also the Music Director for the Youth Brass Band of Central Florida, the educational outreach group for the Brass Band of Central Florida.
Aaron has been a member of the Brass Band of Central Florida since 2012, first as a member of the tenor horn section and now as a member of the cornet section. With the BBCF, he has traveled with the band to the U.K. to perform at Brass in Concert 2014, as well as the National Trumpet Competition and seven trips to the North American Brass Band Association championships, including the most recent 3rd place finishes at NABBA 2018 and 2019.
